Many of you are already fans of my handmade soap line Carolina Soaps, however, I would like to share with you how handmade soap is different than commercial soap such as Dial and Dove.
To put it simply, true soap is made with an alkali (sodium hydroxide) and an acid (oil or combination of oils). When these two ingredients are combined in the right proportions you will get soap through saponification. Saponification produces glycerol and fatty acid salts, which is simply soap.
Many commercial manufacturers will claim their product is “natural” however many include syndets (synthetic detergent) to increase foam and bubbles as well other ingredients or fillers to make those bars last longer. Most of these ingredients are benign in nature, however, they can strip your skin of its natural oil leaving you squeaky clean and very itchy. In addition, the naturally occurring glycerine is removed from commercial soap by the manufacturer by using intensive heat and then sold as a byproduct and used in other products such as cosmetics.
Carolina Soaps is made with vegetable oils (olive, coconut, sunflower and palm oils) and, of course, retains its naturally occurring glycerine. In addition, we like to make soaps that include milks, clays, botanicals and FD&C approved colors. These ingredients make our soaps additionally beneficial to your skin as well as visually appealing. They are fun to look at but even more fun to use!
So if you haven’t tried our handmade soap, stop over and pick up a bar and see for yourself. Sure, its costs more than Dial or Dove, but, you do get what you pay for. :)
